Let Us Clarify a Few Things

Spring is here. You've been dreaming about this color appointment since February. You know exactly what you want lighter, brighter, a full transformation. And honestly? You deserve it.

But here's what we need to tell you, friend to friend, before you sit in our chair:

Most people are making one mistake that quietly sabotages their results before the appointment even starts.

It's not the products you're using. It's not how often you're washing. It's what's been building up in your hair all winter and it's invisible.

This month's edit is all about the prep. The stuff that happens in your shower, before any stylist touches your hair, that makes the difference between a good color result and a great one.

It's All in the Prep

We talk a lot about what you put on your hair. But we don't talk enough about what your shower is putting in it. Hard water, chlorine, and mineral buildup are coating your strands every single time you rinse, and most people have no idea it's happening.

The Filtered Shower Head

Here's a stat that'll make you look at your shower differently: 85% of homes in the US have hard water. That means chlorine, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals are running through your hair every single time you shower. Not sure? Does your tub have the dreaded pink ring? That’s a mineral band!

Over time, those minerals coat each strand. The result is hair that looks dull, feels heavy, breaks more easily, and here's the big one absorbs up to 40% less color. You can have the best colorist in the world, but if hard water buildup is coating your strands, your color is working at a serious disadvantage.

A filtered shower head removes chlorine, heavy metals, and mineral buildup at the source. It balances your scalp's pH, reduces frizz, and makes every product you use actually work better. It's the upgrade most people don't know they need.

Pre-Wash

Pre-wash treatment is applied to dry hair before you ever get it wet. It saturates your strands with nourishment and protection before any water, shampoo, or chemical service touches them. Think of it as priming the canvas. It protects the hair's bond structure during clarification, so you strip the buildup without stripping the moisture your hair actually needs.

For color services specifically, pre-treating means your hair is going into the appointment in its strongest, most resilient state. And stronger hair holds color longer.

Clarifying Shampoo

Your regular shampoo cleans the surface. Clarifying shampoo goes deeper.

Think about everything that accumulates between appointments: dry shampoo, styling products, conditioner buildup, pollution, and the mineral deposits from that hard water we just talked about. A clarifying shampoo strips all of it, leaving your strands genuinely, completely clean.

For color work, this is non-negotiable. Color needs to reach the hair shaft to work evenly. When there's buildup in the way, it grabs inconsistently brassy in some spots, uneven in others. Clarifying first means your colorist is working with a true, clean base.

Use it once a week for 2–3 weeks leading up to any major service. Always follow with a rich conditioner clarify and hydrate, never one without the other.

Scalp Scrubber

Buildup doesn't just live on your strands. It accumulates on your scalp flakes, excess sebum, residue and when your scalp isn't clean, your hair can't grow in clean either.

A silicone scalp scrubber massages away that buildup while boosting circulation to the follicle. More circulation means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the root, which means stronger, faster growing hair. It also ensures your shampoo is actually making contact with your scalp, not just sitting on top of yesterday's dry shampoo.

Use it every wash. It takes 90 extra seconds and the difference is immediate.

Okay bestie, we got you! Clean hair isn't just about looking good on wash day. It's about giving your color, your treatments, and your stylist the best possible canvas to work with.

Bonus: Make Your Shower a Ritual

Here's the thing about great prep it works better when you actually enjoy doing it.

The best results come from consistency, and consistency comes from routines that feel good. So while we're upgrading the function of your shower, let's upgrade the feeling of it too.

Swap your regular towel for a MyKitsch microfiber hair wrap.

Regular terrycloth roughs up the cuticle and causes friction breakage. A smooth microfiber wrap absorbs water without the damage. Smallest swap, biggest payoff.

Add a shower spray. Eucalyptus reduce cortisol and a relaxed scalp is a healthier scalp. Just a few sprays in your shower and just breathe.

Your shower is where your transformation begins. Treat it like the ritual it is and we will see you at your next transformation at CocoLemon!
